About DataLine

DataLine was originally created in July 1991 to be a newsletter that would report on the "glass ceiling" in American corporations. After nearly a decade of running my own search firm, I had a sense that in many ways, things had gotten worse, or at best, slowed, for women and minority men moving into management. There is still very little good research, but what there is in fact shows that despite the slight increase in the actual number of women and minority men in senior positions, three troubling trends were also true:

  1. the rate at which women and minority men were moving up had slowed;
  2. ghettoization of women and minority men in areas like human resources and staff jobs had increased; and
  3. retaliation against anyone who complained of discrimination at management levels was swift and terrible.

The original charter for the newsletter quickly changed as we became aware of similar issues in academic institutions. We also began to write about a number of lawsuits, and became involved in publicizing some of those cases and looking for ways to support the plaintiffs, many of whom faced total ostracism in their fields as well as personal bankruptcy.

So what we would like to do with DataLine now is engage people online in discussing these issues, and solicit interest and support for some of the plaintiffs whose cases we have followed. Please e-mail your thoughts and suggestions to Anne@ClarkeRonce.com. Mailing address for DataLine is:
